What is the Keto diet?

If you look back a little you would surely remember learning in your science class about

carbohydrates present in our foods turning into glucose, which is then transported around the body. Glucose is a very important component that helps our body function. But it also has various

disadvantages that lead to diseases like, high cholesterol, kidney stones, diabetes, and many more. Keto or Ketogenic diet being low carb and high-fat diet plan forces your body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates. To be precise, a Ketogenic meal contains 5% carbs, 25% proteins, and 70% fats. Hence, it can be said that this diet makes your body utilize fat as a source of energy.

The Keto diet is strict for sure but it is not at all complicated as it may sound. You just have to keep in mind some dos and don’ts like —

  • You have to avoid any kind of flour and items made of flour be it, bread, pasta, pizza, etc. Also, skip things like corn, quinoa, rice, lentils, etc. Be sure to eliminate any kind of processed sugar and oil. Along with all these also avoid fruits like strawberries, blueberries, and cranberries.

  • You can have any kind of non-veg like mutton, chicken, fish, eggs, etc. Also, you can have products with high-fat like peanut or almond butter, Greek yogurt, different types of cheese. You can go for a handful of nuts and seeds — pumpkin or sunflower seeds, walnuts, almonds, etc. and can also consume plant-based oils. Apart from these, you can have green leafy vegetables and vegetables that grow above the ground level like bell peppers, mushrooms, beans, spinach, lettuce, etc.

What is the Paleo diet?

The Paleo diet is also referred to as “the caveman diet”, meaning, in this diet, one needs to follow

the diet of early human beings. I’m sure you have read about them and have some knowledge about the kind of food they consumed, i.e., organic, non processed food. One of the main theories of the Paleo diet is that modern-day food processing and production techniques are rapidly damaging human health. Therefore, it believes that we should retreat and follow in the footsteps of our ancestors. Because mimicking their eating pattern will enhance our health and will improve our digestion.

  • Simply saying, this diet eliminates all processed foods by asking you to cut down on dairy products, along with, artificial sweeteners. It eliminates whole grains like oats, brown rice, quinoa, etc. from your diet.

  • It lets you have every kind of fruit and vegetable, and allows you to consume natural sweeteners.

The Paleo diet is not only concerned with your diet, rather it makes you pay close attention to your lifestyle. In short, the Paleo diet along with making you follow the diet asks you to exercise on regular basis.

Many characteristics of both diets point towards their common goal, i.e., making you live a healthy and long life. Those common grounds are—

  • Both emphasize whole foods

On observing the dos and don’ts you would realize both diets focuses on foods that have undergone a minimal amount of processing. They strongly encourage you to let go of highly processed foods and replace them with fresh vegetables, non-veg, and nuts.

  • Both encourage healthy fats

They encourage the consumption of healthy fats that come from non-processed foods and also support the use of plant-based oil.

  • Both might be effective for weight loss

Well, it is one of the various reasons for the popularity of Keto and Paleo diets. Their dos and

don’ts not only make you follow a healthy lifestyle but also helps you lose weight.

Paleo vs Keto

Both diets are excellent, depending on how they are implemented. But if compared, Paleo comes

out as a healthier option because it focuses on things beyond diet. Also, most people prefer to go for the Paleo diet, for, it is easy to follow and is more flexible. On the other hand, the Keto diet is more difficult to follow because of its strict norms. Getting the daily nutrient requirement also becomes challenging because of the limited food choices that it offers. Therefore, people prefer going for the Keto diet only when they are medically advised.

I, personally prefer the Paleo diet, because it not only focuses on the diet but helps you build a

healthy lifestyle. Other than this, the Paleo diet is more lenient, and therefore, it’s easy to follow. It doesn't even force you to move much from your usual routine or isolate yourself during family

gatherings. Apart from this, I would like to suggest you follow any of these diet plans only after

receiving proper guidelines from a doctor or dietician.
